GIS Overview
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are geospatial data management and analysis tools that are used to improve planning and decision making, especially where the questions involve spatial data. Many GIS data sets began as computer aided design (CAD) files, which evolved into automated mapping/facilities management (AM/FM), and finally into GIS. GEC has an extensive project history in all facets of GIS system design and customization and GIS data conversion and creation. GEC uses this experience to assist clients in successfully implementing and utilizing GIS technology.
GEC's GIS program began in the 1980s and consisted of applying the Army Corps of Engineers GRASS to planning projects and in the conduct of engineering AM/FM projects. Since then, GEC's GIS Department has grown to meet the needs and expectations of a wide variety of clients by expanding our GIS capability, as well as capacity, so that we can successfully conduct multidisciplinary enterprise GIS projects and any components of such.
GEC’s core GIS staff consists of five Project Mangers and six GIS Analysts supported by a staff of approximately seven GIS and GPS technicians. Most Project Managers and Analysts have advanced degrees in GIS and related fields such as hydrology, agronomy, landscape architecture, biology, forestry and wildlife management, and anthropology. The diverse background of GEC’s GIS professionals enhances our ability to apply GIS to a variety of projects and clients.
