An enterprise GIS is a complex system of users and data sets integrated for common as well as specific uses. Among the many advantages of an enterprise system is that it allows data sharing and less redundancy of both data sets and data automation efforts. The enterprise system also provides a more efficient and accurate decision-making tool at all levels of use.
GEC has led and participated in the implementation of numerous enterprise GIS systems for municipalities, governmental departments and military bases. Prior to implementation, the system and its proposed uses, users and desired data sets need to be explored and organized into a plan of action with associated costs. The recommended approach to this is through a needs analysis and feasibility study. After deciding on an acceptable and affordable approach, a database design is recommended. These three plans serve as roadmap to implementation. Early stages of implantation include conversion of existing data and base mapping. These set the framework of the GIS and are usually the most costly components of an enterprise GIS. GEC is well versed in all types of data conversion, creation, collection and finally data automation, or enabling the data to work together in the GIS.
