Project Summary:

GEC is the prime consultant in the design of the replacement and upgrading of the state’s aging interstate signage system.  The guide signs across the many miles of the state’s interstate network have not been replaced since they were originally installed as part of the interstate construction process back in the early 1970’s.  As a result, the signs have out-lived their service life in terms of reflectivity and general readability.  Todays signs are designed with the older driver in mind – larger, more readable fonts with high reflectivity in night conditions.  Better sign placement for advanced warnings give drivers more time to absorb the necessary information to be used in a timely fashion, making their drive safer and giving them better expectations for where and when to exit the system and safely reach their destination.  To date, this project has encompassed four task orders for the following sections:

  • I-20 Mainline from Richland Parish Line to the Junction of US 80 near Delta (31 miles and 5 interchanges)
  • I-10 Mainline from Gramercy to Belle Terre (14 miles and 2 interchanges)
  • I-20 Mainline from Lincoln Parish Line to the Junction of US 165 in Monroe (36 miles and 11 interchanges)
  • I-10 Mississippi River Bridge and approaches
  • The last task order also includes a complete re-design of all the structure mounted bridge trusses to withstand the continuous stresses of heavy truck vibrations and higher than normal wind loads.
